Dragon Boat Festival

This year is the second year that the Chinese government has granted workers a day off for the traditional festival. The holiday falls on May 28 but an extension day off will be granted to some on May 29. Folks will start getting things ready to make zongzi, a traditional snack made of sticky rice steamed inside a bamboo leaf. Chinese people eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival as commemoration to the legend behind the festival.

There are small celebrations on the mainland, but Hong Kong is a great place to take part in Dragon Boat Festival activities. Read more about the festival in Hong Kong from Hong Kong Guide, Rory Boland.

grundgesetz

This logo appears at http://www.google.de today.

The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Grundgesetz für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is the constitution[1] of Germany. It was formally approved on May 8, 1949 and, with the signature of the Allies, came into effect on May 23, 1949 as the constitution of West Germany.

The German word Grundgesetz may be translated as either Basic Law or Fundamental Law (Grund is cognate with the English word ground). The term Verfassung (constitution) was not used, as the drafters regarded the Grundgesetz as a provisional constitution for the provisional West German state and would not prejudice the decisions of a future reunified Germany to adopt a constitution. Shortly after its adoption, the East German Soviet occupation zone was transformed into the communist German Democratic Republic (GDR) with its own constitution.

A team of researchers Tuesday (May 19th 2009) unveiled an almost perfectly intact fossil of a 47 million-year-old primate they say represents the long-sought missing link between humans and apes.

Officially known as Darwinius masillae, the fossil of the lemur-like creature dubbed Ida shows it had opposable thumbs like humans and fingernails instead of claws.

Scientists say the cat-sized animal's hind legs offer evidence of evolutionary changes that led to primates standing upright - a breakthrough that could finally confirm Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

Another good coverage of this event can be read here.

Mother's Day - 10 May

Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.

One school of thought claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March.

The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.

In addition to Mother's Day, International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries on March 8.

The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor their mother, and it's now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father's Day, the celebration honoring fathers.

This holiday is relatively modern, being created at the start of the 20th century, and should not be confused with the early pagan and Christian traditions honoring mothers, or with the 16th century celebration of Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother's Day in the UK.

In most countries the Mother's Day celebration is a recent holiday derived from the Mothering Sunday holiday in the UK.

It is celebrated in the United States each year on the second Sunday of May.

In Malaysia and some other countries, Mother's Day is celebrated today, 10th May 2009. You can find the dates for other countries here.
